Sunshine on My Shoulder

I am not going to talk about masks or go on about the numerous studies which have shown that masks, at least cloth masks do very little to discourage viral infection. The present COVID-19 resurgence pretty much proves that masks don’t work but instead of getting information out about what does protect folks from “The Virus”, governments just double down on lockdowns and masks. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results. It was supposed to be to flatten the curve for a month or so but has morphed into a control paradigm from some dystopian 1950’s science fiction magazine.

Mask shaming has actually become a thing. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan scolded residents of his state who choose not to wear a face mask, telling them, “there is no constitutional right to walk around without a mask. It’s sort of like saying, I have a constitutional right to drive drunk.” Can this guy be serious? Comparing going without a mask to driving under the influence. That’s complete lunacy but like I said at the top, this isn’t about masks or my judgement about masks, it’s about what we can do to protect ourselves from COVID-19.

One of the simplest, cheapest and most effective preventive measures you can employ is Vitamin D. Over 90% of Americans are deficient in Vitamin D, which is actually a hormone rather than a vitamin. It is produced in the skin in response to sunlight and is also absorbed from food eaten as part of a healthy balanced diet. A vitamin D deficiency causes rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. As a regulator of other functions throughout the body, it has been suggested that a lack of vitamin D is linked to an inability to fight infections effectively, muscle weakness, fatigue and the development of diabetes, certain cancers, multiple sclerosis, depression, heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke.

The beauty of vitamin D is that it is nearly impossible to overdose on and it’s cheap. It strengthens the immune system and fights a long list of ailments, not just COVID-19 and it is very likely that you are not getting enough of it, especially at high latitudes, this time of year. If you live at the beach, you can just take a morning walk with as few clothes as possible and the UVB will be more than enough but if you can’t get a half dozen hours of sunlight per week, you should probably use supplementation. Studies show that more is better; 8000 I.U. is a good starting point.

Here is a link to a site that Dr. Joseph Mercola started, to provide information on the wonders of vitamin D and other modalities to help protect against COVID-19.

Another link to a Ben Greenfield podcast talking to Dr. Mercola, if you prefer to listen, instead of read. Good listening while walking in the sunshine on the beach collecting some vitamin D.
