So, what is 3MPH all about?
3mph.org is about slowing down; taking a little extra time to smell the flowers along the path, as you explore the Great Wide World. Slow enough that the majesty and beauty of nature shines through. In today’s fast-paced and technologically advanced society, you’re constantly bombarded with an insane volume of information.
The mind is a very complex system that’s constantly processing that information and responding to external stimuli. Your brain has evolved to be highly active and alert to potential threats, and to heavily weight survival in your decision making. This inherent tendency towards vigilance can make it difficult for your mind to switch off and relax.
If you do not intentionally seek to quiet your mind, it can become overwhelmed by the invasion of information, leading to cognitive dissonance, confusion and even fear. Your mind doesn’t appreciate that rest is a good thing. It’s constantly seeking the next next thing to be doing. Do something, it constantly screams, in that wee, little mind voice.
It resists resting, even though it’s beneficial for overall health and well-being. Our mission at 3mph.org is to find ways to quiet the mind and allow it to rest. Activities such as meditation, deep breathing, exercise; enjoying nature, gardening, hiking, biking and fishing. There are of course many other hobbies and leisure activities that can promote relaxation and provide the mind with much-needed respite. Find one!
Over time, your mind develops habitual patterns of thinking, that indulge in over-planning, worrying and ruminating. These patterns become ingrained, and your mind defaults to them instead of being present. Resting the mind requires being fully in the moment and letting go of excessive thinking. It is challenging to quiet the mind and stay in the here and now.
Our goal at 3mph.org, is to live simply. To commune with nature and like minded folks on a similar journey. We all have the same finish line. Is racing headlong towards oblivion at the highest possible speed in your best interest? Perhaps it’s time to slow down; to breathe and appreciate all of the wonders of the Great Wide World. 3mph may be the perfect speed.
Our culture puts a high value on productivity, achievement, and constant busyness. This societal pressure can make you feel guilty or anxious when you’re not engaged in some form of activity. You’re taught from childhood to integrate into the status quo, where you need to earn a living, succeed, win, get rich and myriad other teachings on the nature of happiness.
Consider what a life well spent looks like and how to make your journey full of adventure. It’s definitely not about chasing someone else’s idea of success. Ask yourself, where does my bliss lie and then follow that. At 3mph.org, we’ll share thoughts, experiences and ramblings on our journey, please join us. Slow down and smell the flowers.
