Beaker Street was an underground music program broadcast across the Midwest when I was a teenager. In the 1960s Beaker Street was a staple of the underground music scene in the upper Mid-West. The strong nighttime signal of 50,000 watts meant that it was possible to listen to the station’s programming across a wide area. The strong broadcast signal enabled Beaker Street to deliver the music of the late 1960s counterculture to many smaller cities and towns in the Central U.S.
Beaker Street attracted a legion of fans with its pioneering format, which featured long Rock album cuts that otherwise didn’t get much commercial airtime. That’s where I first heard Jaimie Brockett’s – “Legend of the USS Titanic.” Brockett didn’t have much other commercial success but this cut became a late night underground cult classic.
