Vickie gave me an iPhone 12 Mini for Christmas. She has a wonderful knack for gifting me the toys I really want but would never buy for myself. Last year it was a MacBook Pro. The MacBook is one of my most cherished possessions and an important part of the creative process for me. Almost all of my writing and photographic processing get done on it. I really would not want to be without it.
Then Apple announced the new 12’s
The new/old retro form factor and the exceptional reviews on the camera got me interested. Big phones and rounded edges just never got me excited. The iPhone 5 was the apex of Apple Phone design. It was the phone that changed everything. A phone so beautiful that it made Apple the richest company in the world. I made the mistake of suggesting once too often that Apple went back to their roots with the mini, and put a phone on the market that makes sense, though I still wouldn’t have purchased one for myself, even though it is the most beautiful phone in the world, with an awesome camera.
The rest of the world probably won’t agree with me on the matter. It is not about form and function for most of the folks. It’s bigger is better, even if they need a hip holster or mega purse just to carry it.
More recently for me a phone has been something I would just as soon do without. There has not been much use for one since retirement. If anyone needs to get ahold of us, I am more than happy for them to call Vickie. Thought about just turning my phone off but it does have a few uses that make it worth keeping around. Listening to Apple Music, checking stock prices and if I get into trouble out on the bike, I can call someone to come and rescue me.
Size Matters
Yet here I am with a beautiful little iPhone 12 Mini nestled deep in my pocket and the weather is unseasonably warm out here on the High Planes, so we have been getting plenty of walking in, the last few days. I started playing with the camera a bit. It’s addicting. Every time I looked up from taking pictures, Vickie would be a little speck on the horizon a quarter mile away. I would run and eventually catch up but then I would see something else, that I just had to test the wide angle out on.
Never expected to have this much fun with a phone again. Is it a phone or a camera? Is it worth the money? I don’t care, it’s fun.
