M.M.M. #186 – Deadwood Revival

The High Sierra Music Festival is an annual Fourth of July weekend event renowned for blending Americana, bluegrass, jazz, and jam bands. Surviving over three decades, the grassroots festival is celebrated for its intimate, family-friendly atmosphere, daily parades, and deep-rooted community. Roy Carter, one of the original founders of the High Sierra Music Festival and DelFest, died of congestive heart failure Monday, April 29, 2024, at age 68.

Carter founded the High Sierra Music Festival in 1991 at a time when camping music festivals were single-genre events. There were bluegrass, rock, folk, and jazz festivals, but the High Sierra Music Festival was a pioneer in combining different genres at a single event. Subsequently, the festival nurtured the burgeoning jam scene, helping boost the careers of acts such as String Cheese Incident, Leftover Salmon, Yonder Mountain String Band, and many others. Carter had a keen eye for talent and was known for booking bands very early in their careers.

Kim and Jason formed the duo “Deadwood Revival” in the early 2000s. Hundreds of concerts and festivals, four west coast tours, and two cd’s later…Kim and Jason reconnected with longtime friend, bassist Ches Ferguson and fiddler Julie Campbell. The foursome toured the West Coast multiple times, released a live album, and became known as one of the hottest bands in the old-time, bluegrass and jam band scene until disbanding in 2011, but they are back at it.

This show is from a couple of decades ago, the early days for both the High Sierra and Deadwood Revival. Side A this week and side B next week.
