Oktoberfest
Texas is a long way from Germany, but there’s plenty of German culture in Texas. Beginning in the 1830s, Germans fled religious and political oppression in their native country, looking for sanctuary in a new land, and they found it here. Letters sent back home spoke of a boundless sea of green. A land, unstained by the corruption and persecution of Germany that offered an opportunity to live as free men and women.
They kept coming, too; between 1865 and 1900, 40,000 Germans made their way to the Lone Star State, the single largest group of European immigrants. A wide swath of the state from the coast to the Hill Country is dotted with German settlements, like Shiner. So October is a great month to experience Texas. Bratwurst and Beer, it’s hard to beat that combination. So we’ve been enjoying some Oktoberfest fun down here on Galveston Bay this month.
Oktoberfest is one of Vickie’s favorite beers, and sitting on the patio enjoying a couple is one of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon;>)
We tested out the “Beer Brats in a Blanket” while we were hanging out at Galveston Bay Brewery, and they were delicious. We’ve been fans of Texas/German Kolaches for a while, so we thought we would try some DIY “Brats in a Blanket” in the mini kitchen at “The Bus.”
