Two for Tuesday – March 19th,2024

Docks are the subject in this Tuesday’s image pair. Piers and docks aren’t just fish holding magnets or places to tie up boats, they make for interesting photography. Pilings come in many configurations, cast interesting shadows and offer numerous setups. And docks are always in the water, which reflects and refracts, making it a favorite subject for many landscape photographers.

The first image is in Galveston Bay near San Leon and the dock looks like it was disassembled by a hurricane. The chocolate color of the foreground water contrasts nicely with the blue sky and blue water in the upper half of the image. The chunky rocks add some interest in the foreground.

The second dock is in Clear Lake and the rope rails draped between the pilings are what first caught my eye but then I noticed the eroded sections of the pilings at water level and that got me excited about capturing the image. High contrast black and white seemed like the way to process it, because of the featureless sky.
