One of the things I truly love about this time of year is walking out the back door of the cottage into the cool morning sunshine and harvesting breakfast from the garden. We backed off on the garden this year. It’s a lot of work and we didn’t want to get as tied down as we felt last year. So we planted only the things we have the most fun with; tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, jalapenos and a bunch of basil.
Food should be fun and exciting. The colors, the smells, the tastes; is there anything else that permeates all of our senses like food? Umm – No. It’s a celebration of life. Food does more than provide sustenance, it provides immense pleasure. Food is a cultural experience and a creative endeavor. It’s no surprise that food has been depicted in art for centuries. In fact the preparation of food might just be one of the highest forms of art.
Some folks argue that because we eat food, it cannot be considered a proper art object; art is supposed to be timeless and lasting, they say. I say, they have too many rules, art is about creativity, emotions and beauty. What is more creative and beautiful than preparing (and eating), amazing fresh food that provides energy, pleasure and of course life giving sustenance.
