In the 60s and 70s, there were far fewer options; decision-making was almost manageable. In the 21st century, not so much. The digital revolution has flooded our younger generations with infinite possibilities and choices across consumption, careers, relationships, entertainment, and pretty much everything else.

The paradox of choice, popularized by psychologist Barry Schwartz in his 2004 book “The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less,” argues that while some choice is essential for autonomy and well-being, too many options lead to anxiety, dissatisfaction, and regret. FOMO—fear of missing out—is pervasive in our society and compounds the problem by turning every decision into a high-stakes analysis with countless unrealized alternatives (fantasyland).

Together, the paradox of choice and FOMO create a psychic strain that did not exist back in the day. More’s not better; additional options don’t improve the outcome, it undermines it. With fewer alternatives, you can evaluate them quickly and commit to your choice. With hundreds of options, it’s overwhelming, and decision-making becomes too complicated.

Less is More

People spend vast amounts of time and energy researching, comparing, and second-guessing themselves, and then when they finally make a choice, they’re haunted by the possibility that a better option exists. Then, they feel unsatisfied, and regret sets in. In some cases, folks start avoiding decisions altogether or ask others what to do. What makes the paradox more acute in the 21st century is not just the number of options, but the infrastructure that keeps them constantly visible and socially important. The internet and smartphones have changed everything.

Algorithms continuously feed your scroll with additional options tailored to your past behavior, making your choices appear limitless. When I was young, geography, time, and information created natural boundaries. Today, those boundaries have largely dissolved. FOMO amplifies this dynamic by adding a powerful social dimension. FOMO is the apprehension that others are experiencing rewarding events, opportunities, or lifestyles that you’re missing out on. Social media is a continuous highlight reel of your peers’ curated successes—travel, relationships, and career milestones.

Decision Fatigue

When I was growing up, we had three television stations: ABC, NBC, and CBS. Now there are on-demand libraries with tens of thousands of titles, but I have a harder time finding anything worthwhile to watch. Is it decision fatigue, or the sense that whatever I choose is suboptimal compared to one of the other million possibilities? Career and educational choices follow a similar trajectory. Young people confront not only traditional professions but gig work, remote work, creator economies, and other rapidly evolving fields. Knowing peers are pursuing alternative trajectories—publicized on social media—creates fear about making a choice and committing to it.

The psychological mechanisms underlying this intensification are well documented. Folks expend more effort, experience greater stress during the decision process, and report lower satisfaction afterward. Even time becomes scarce, consumed by research and rumination rather than committing to a path and living with the results. Chronic decision fatigue and comparative anxiety contribute to depression, dissatisfaction, and regret among the younger generations who are deeply immersed in digital environments. Relationship formation can become tentative, and community engagement suffers when individuals treat local options as provisional.

Freedom

Autonomy, variety, and the ability to escape poorly fitting circumstances are genuine issues, but when options multiply faster than our cognitive and emotional capacity to evaluate them, and when social technologies continuously advertise the roads not taken, the net effect can be reduced well-being rather than enhanced. In the 21st century, the paradox of choice has moved beyond choosing a television program and become a structural feature of daily life. FOMO serves as its emotional accelerant, turning an abundance of possibility into persistent unease.

The key is recognizing that freedom without limits, visibility without respite, and comparison without end can leave you less free in the ways that matter most: free to decide, free to commit, and free to be satisfied with the life you actually lead. The challenge of the present paradigm is not about having more choices but about recovering the capacity to choose well—and then to commit to those choices without the constant shadow of what might have been.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1200" height="674"
